It’s Friday! Here we go—Memorial Day weekend is finally here, the unofficial beginning of summer when grills across America fire up and the smell of burgers, hot dogs, and charcoal fills the air. Beaches will be packed with people soaking up the sun after months of wicked-cold weather, while car shows and cruise nights bring out everything from shiny Corvettes to classics and customs. Coolers will be stocked, lawn chairs unfolded, and somebody’s uncle will volunteer himself as the neighborhood grill master even though he burns half the brats every damn year! It’s the kind of weekend that reminds you summer isn’t about doing anything fancy—it’s about good warm weather, loud music, food on the grill, and trying to enjoy every minute before the weekend’s over.
This Sunday is also what I like to call the high-holy day of racing! First it’s the 110th running of The Greatest Spectacle In Racing—The Indianapolis 500 and then the longest NASCAR race—The Coca-Cola 600!
And… the official pace car for the 110th Indianapolis 500 is a custom-painted Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. The patriotic gas-electric hybrid hypercar features a red, white, and blue stars-and-stripes paint job to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States, and will be driven by Indiana University head football coach Curt Cignetti.
Also, on a sad note, 2-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch passed away suddenly from an severe illness yesterday. He was 41.
