A Rough Road

It’s Friday! Well, as many of you probably suspected, I’ve spent another week on another unexpected vacation in the hospital. And by “vacation,” I mean the kind where the food is questionable, the entertainment consists of beeping machines, and nobody lets you leave when you want to.

Last Wednesday, I went in for an MRI on my hip. The following day, my doctor called with some news that immediately ruined my plans. He’d found another abscess in my hip, and this time the infection had invaded the hip bone itself. When your doctor tells you to get your ass to the hospital immediately, you don’t screw around—you drop everything and go, which is precisely what I did.

Once admitted, I was treated to a barrage of heavy-duty IV antibiotics before eventually finding myself headed into surgery early Monday morning. And what was my reward for going under the knife? You guessed it! MORE heavy-duty IV antibiotics. Apparently, the medical community decided I hadn’t experienced quite enough nausea yet.

That routine continued for several more days until I was finally released Thursday night. You’d think that would be the end of this little adventure, but no such luck. Now I get to enjoy daily IV antibiotic infusions right here at home for the next several weeks. Because apparently, I hadn’t accumulated enough medical appointments, needles, debt, and general misery to last me a lifetime.

It’s been a rough road, to put it mildly. I was very sick during this latest ordeal, and honestly, I’m not one hundred percent. This whole infection saga has turned into one hell of a battle, and I’m getting pretty damn tired of being a regular customer of the American healthcare system.

But I’m home now, the surgery is behind me, and the antibiotics are doing their thing. If everything goes according to plan, a few more weeks of treatment should hopefully get me through this mess and allow me to continue a life not centered around IV infusions.

So, for now, I’ll be taking things one day at a time, following the doctors’ orders, and doing my best to get past this. I appreciate everyone who has been checking in and I’ll go through all the email soon. Hopefully, the next update I post will involve something a little more entertaining than abscesses, surgery, and IV bags.
