It’s Monday. Remember the 1978 film Corvette Summer? If not, here’s the quick-and-dirty: a young Mark Hamill plays Kenny, a high school kid who heads to Las Vegas to track down a stolen, wildly customized ’73 Corvette Stingray he and his shop class built. Along the way, he teams up with Vanessa (Annie Potts), a “hooker-in-training,” and together they take on car thieves, shady adults, and basically anyone standing between them and that over-the-top Vette.
Only two cars were built for the movie. One ended up in Australia, and the other spent years right here in Illinois at Mid America Motorworks before disappearing into private ownership. I’ve been lucky enough to see and photograph the “A” car a few times over the years, and ever since that first look, I’ve wanted one in the worst way. Not the real thing—I’d prefer a well-built replica.
Which brings me to this guy online who’s been building one. I’ve been following his progress for about a year now, and he’s just about finished. There are a few replicas floating around out there, but this one is easily the best I’ve seen. And here’s the kicker—he plans to sell it when it’s done.
So now I’m looking at all of you. This site pulls in around 10,000 hits a day. Do the math… if everyone tossed in about five bucks, we might actually be talking about a legitimate down payment here, with me figuring out the rest. You’d be helping me check off a lifelong dream and get behind the wheel of one of the coolest Corvette movie cars ever built.
