It’s Thursday. Here’s something you definitely don’t see every day—a wildly customized 750-horsepower Rat Rod Humvee! On this recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay welcomes back comedian (and certified car nut) Jeff Dunham, who rolls in with his outrageous 1987 AM General Humvee.
What started life as a military-spec High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) is now a slammed, 9,000-pound pavement bruiser thanks to the crew at Patriot Liner. This Humvee-Hummer mashup packs 750 horsepower, a custom bomber-jacket leather interior, a rugged veteran-owned “bed-liner” paint finish, and a wild suspension setup that drops the entire chassis flat onto the asphalt.
It’s equal parts military muscle and hot-rod insanity. Hit play to see all the details—and of course, watch Jay take this beast out for a spin.

In this episode, Jay and Jeff dive into:
The Powerplant: How a Duramax Turbo Diesel with compound turbos jumped from 350hp to a massive 750 horsepower.
Humvee vs. Hummer: Jeff explains the history of how Arnold Schwarzenegger helped transition these military beasts into civilian daily drivers.
Fly-by-Wire Steering: Jay tackles the bizarre experience of driving a vehicle with no mechanical steering column, where the wheel “straightens itself out” like an RC car.
The Build: A look at the 40-inch Mickey Thompson tires, the Allison transmission, and the massive custom components that make this beast surprisingly smooth to drive.
Military History: Jay and Jeff discuss the 600,000 miles of testing the AM General went through to beat out Chrysler and Teledyne for the original government contract.
Watch as Jay navigates this “uncontrolled” monster through the streets and finds out why Jeff used an H1 as his family’s daily driver for over a decade.
