It’s Thursday. The racing history between the Corvette and AC Cobra in the 60s was fierce and well documented. The Cobra weighed 1,000 pounds less than the Stingray, so it had a significant advantage on the track and basically kicked the Stingray’s ass. That is until Zora, the father of the Corvette, built the Grand Sport Corvettes. These five cars went on to beat the Cobras before Chevrolet officially pulled out of racing.
Needless to say, the Cobra was a dominate force in racing and has a strong following. Chuck, one of my readers is no exception. He can remember seeing one at a local dealership when he was younger and would go there often to dream. These days that’s a pretty big dream because an original Cobra can go for six to seven figures at auction!

My favorite car from a slightly earlier time was the AC Cobra. This would have been circa 1963-1965, or so. As best I can remember that cobra with a Ford 289 engine sold for about $7500 new, which made the stingray a real bargain. The local dealership had one cobra in stock and I would go often to look and dream.
A 427 cobra could run 0-100-0 in less than one city block. I know somebody that did it. And he did it with an overweight passenger (not me – I was skinny back then). The passenger proclaimed he would never ride with that driver again.

Eventually the engine was upgraded to the Ford 427 cu-in muscle car engine. The Cobra 427 S/C had a 0-100-0 mph time of 13.8 seconds (https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/dodge-viper-versus-shelby-cobra/).
